This guide steps through a very simple procedure to connect a SEGbox built for a WiFi connection to your wireless internet service.

To proceed, you will need to know a couple of things about this service, namely:

  1. The ESSID or network name, what it's called
  2. The security key/password, if required used to access it
  3. The encryption type, PSK2, WPA, WEP and NONE

Let's get to it!

Boot up your SEGbox, this may take a minute or so.  You will know when it's done when the power LED glows continuously green.

Connect the SEGbox to your computer using an ethernet cable.  Note: make sure to connect your computer to the LAN port on the SEGbox!

Point your browser at the address:  (if this conflicts with your network, it's possible to change this to some other subnet, but that step isn't covered here.

It's possible a black screen may appear with LuCI - Lua Configuration Interface, click this if necessary, and it will take you to the login screen, where you need to enter:

username:  root
password:   energyaware

...you may care to change these, however if you forget! Your box will need re-building.

Then once in, navigate to the wireless setup page, Network -> Wifi -> WL0 as pictured

select from the menu

Once in, then enter your wireless network details, hit save!

and configurate

And that should be that!

A small note of warning...  The SEGbox has a process that trys and re-connects it's wifi if it drops out for some reason.  It's possible that if you are too slow doing the above, then it may reboot itself or become unresponsive.

If this happens, don't panic!  Just pull the power, power it back up and start again, working promptly through the process!

If you have any problems, let us know.
